What is the Food Bank Drop off Service?

Purpose of the Food Bank Drop off

The Food Bank Drop off initiative was started by ambitious and dedicated volunteers who wanted to help humanity by starting locally. The Food Bank Drop off project connects with different local organizations that collect food at a larger scale. By connecting with other local food banks we hope to benefit different parts of the community. Working with larger local food banks helps the local communities become stronger.

The committed volunteers of the Food Bank Drop off project work enthusiastically to help the community at large by putting their share of time each week on Friday’s.

Students, visitors, and staff drop food items in the Food Bank Drop off bin through out the weeks. Everyone gets an opportunity to get involved in the act of giving by engaging in the Food Bank Drop off project. The project is an ongoing effort that requires the local community to replenish the Food Bank bins throughout the year.

How Our Volunteers Help

The team consists of five committed volunteers, each given a specific task to carry:

1. First volunteer empties the food from the large containers.

2. Second volunteer sorts the item by its food group.

3. Third volunteer ensures quality control by checking each item closely for expiry dates. A check mark is put on each item that passes quality control. The food item that does not pass quality control has an ‘X’ marked on the item.

4. Fourth volunteer bags food items that have been checked.

Once the food items have gone through the four step process, the food is ready to be picked up the local Food Bank organization(s) we have partnered with.

Youth Involvement

The young are the leaders of tomorrow. The Food Bank Drop off project relies on the help of all members of the community. The youth are encouraged to participate by dropping in and helping empty the bins and then to help carry the final packed bags.

The youth learn valuable lessons in helping members of the local community and engaging in activities that will lead them to contribute to society.
